Brett Favre was one of the most beloved figures in NFL history when he finally retired following the 2010 season. He’d built a Hall of Fame career and carved out a legacy as one of the greatest fun-loving players in history. Sadly that legacy is falling apart these days. In April, news surfaced that the former QB was potentially involved in a Mississippi scandal that saw millions of dollars embezzled from the state welfare to fund a volleyball stadium at Southern Mississippi University.

People were quick to defend Favre over the issues, refusing to believe he had any reason to do that after making $140 million in NFL contracts. The quarterback insisted he’d done nothing wrong. Well, that statement lost a lot of credibility, thanks to the New York Times. They received information that Favre had texted a nonprofit responsible for delivering funds to welfare recipients.

“If you were to pay me,” he wrote in the 2017 text, “is there any way the media could find out where it came from and how much?”

That indicates Favre knew precisely where the money was coming from and wanted to make sure nobody found out. It means he committed a crime that is as greedy and low as it can get—stealing money from poor people that barely have enough to eat. People are furious over the revelation. That includes Favre’s former teammate Sage Rosenfels.

Brett Favre always seemed like a shady guy.

He endorsed Republican Thad Cochrane for the U.S. Senate; a made who uses the same desk owned by Confederate president Jefferson Davis. Everybody remembered his sexting scandal with a New York Jets reporter in 2008. Remember that Favre is married. Now we get this welfare fraud scam. Nobody debates the man was great at throwing the football. Beyond that, it might be time to accept he’s also a somewhat reprehensible human being.

It is a shame. This never needed to happen. Brett Favre shouldn’t need more money. The guy was set for life. Even if he somehow lost his fortune, there would’ve been countless opportunities to keep making loads of cash for the rest of his life. Instead, he took the sleaziest route possible to give his former school a building he could’ve paid for out of pocket with ease. It serves as a grim reminder that, for many people, there is no such thing as enough money.
