After nine successful seasons with the Buffalo Bills, former head coach Sean McDermott is already drawing attention as one of the NFL’s top future coaching candidates.
Although McDermott has announced he will step away from coaching during the 2026 NFL season, his name has already surfaced as a potential head coach for 2027.
According to Pro Football Focus, McDermott is among 15 coaches who could land NFL head coaching jobs in the near future. Despite being dismissed by Buffalo after the 2025 season, his résumé remains one of the league’s strongest.
Sean McDermott’s Success in Buffalo
McDermott compiled an impressive 98-50 regular-season record over nine seasons while leading the Bills to:
Eight playoff appearances
Two AFC Championship Game appearances
Multiple AFC East titles
Five-plus seasons with an elite quarterback in Josh Allen
While Buffalo consistently fielded competitive teams, playoff shortcomings ultimately led the organization to move in a different direction. Defensive inconsistencies—particularly in the secondary and pass rush—often proved costly in the postseason despite several top-10 defensive rankings during McDermott’s tenure.
Why McDermott Will Be in Demand
NFL teams looking for stability and proven leadership are expected to have strong interest in McDermott when he decides to return. His ability to build winning cultures, develop players, and consistently reach the playoffs makes him one of the most experienced coaching candidates available.
Although he plans to spend the 2026 season away from the sidelines, McDermott has made it clear he isn’t finished coaching. Earlier this offseason, he said he “absolutely” intends to return to the NFL.
The only remaining questions are when that opportunity comes—and which franchise will hire one of the league’s most accomplished head coaches.
